For your e-mail,
no longer will you be just some-one at anywhere.com. You will have an
e-mail address that indicates that you are here on the web to stay. Many
of the "free" email accounts convey a sense of lack of permanence.
It is well known that these accounts are used by spammers and scammers, due to
the ease with which they can be set up. This is not to say that all
people with these addresses are scammers or spammers - quite the opposite.
But, unfortunately a great deal of the success or failure on the Internet,
like in the traditional business world, is about image.
For your website,
you will be a www yourwebname dot com, with the opportunity to become as big
(or small) as any other individual or business. Contrast this with being
a part of someone else's domain. Example: www a-big-domain-name dot
com/user/124 or www someone-else's-domain/user/your-initials.
Both your e-mail
address and your website convey the image of permanence and professionalism to
the world.
Regardless of the
size of your website, or even if you do not set-up a website at the
beginning, all of your email addresses (and autoresponders (if available
from your ISP) can carry your domain name. This allows you to establish
your presence on the web, complete with your own email address. You will
be able to pick YOUR name --- no longer will you have to use a name like
"john12345678" which is assigned by someone else.
Extra
mailboxes will use the same domain name, regardless of the use (personal,
business, members of your family, your pet etc). Yes, here at On Line
Services, one person's pet does have his (hmm - its) own mailbox.
No matter who you
use for your Internet Service Provider, that name is yours - and stays
registered to you as long as you pay the annual fee. If you change
providers, the name goes with you....
The small
investment for your own domain name can give you your own
place on the net. Should you choose to, you can make it a home, complete
with pictures of the family, resumes, hobbies etc., ---- or a business ---- or
a combination of both, ---- but regardless it is ALL yours.
Think of the
domain name purchase as your piece of real estate ---- you can then build on
it at your own pace.
