Ok....we did everything
right ---
we created the perfect plan (well almost)
we picked the perfect domain name for our website
we built the perfect drop dead gorgeous website
(ok - well almost)
we ordered a comprehensive website promotion (perfect)
Our statistics
were great !
more hits than we ever expected, but they kept dwindling
fewer and fewer.
It's now down to two
visitors per day (thanks ma!)
I wonder who the other one is? (hmm - yup - me)
WHY?
Let's say your
website is about a cat -- and you show the cat sleeping..
When the visitor comes the first time, they see a cat sleeping.
When
they come back a second time, what do they see?
A cat sleeping.
Does the average
visitor need to come back again???
Now, let's
change things a little -
Same Website, only when the visitor comes
back the second time, they see
A cat with a hat
(hmmm it rhymes - maybe
there's a book title there)
The visitor will come back the third time to find
A cat chasing a rat.
ok
- it was a dumb example, but the message is very clear
change, change, change and more change.
There are many ways to keep a website current - and to keep it changing.
Just a couple of
ideas to start ----
-
.a calendar of events
-
.a "what's
new" page
-
changing pictures (if you use them)
-
contests
-
free information on various subjects
-
message boards
-
chat areas
-
always adding new
content
A website
should never be finished...
It is always a work in
process.
It needs
constant care,
. . .
. . .cleaning
(eliminate old material)
. . .
. . .and feeding
(with new information)
It needs to foster two way communication
. . .
. .(email,
auto-responders, mailing lists)
. . .
. . . . (message boards, list servers)
And last,
but not least,
It needs to be promoted on a regular basis.
